Choosing a Curriculum

Here are some considerations when you are deciding just what geology curriculum to purchase for your child:

Do you have any curriculum requirements to satisfy? You can construct a whole year of high school Earth Science by combining the following curricula:

Level I Level II

Igneous Rocks, Metamorphic Rocks,

Sedimentary Rocks, Minerals and

Rock and Mineral Identification

Choose any two curricula

Feed that budding interest in Geology in your child!

Too often we parents are irritated by the piles of rocks our kids bring home.

Considering their ages, start with something that already has their interest.  For example, boys generally like things that either bite or explode.  Solution?  The Dinosaur and Volcano curricula with the corresponding kits!

Developing a hobby with your children is one of the best ways to build a relationship with them:

Again, considering their ages, choose a curriculum that feeds their interest.

Plan time to take some field trips that explore what you are studying.  Studying geology without the field trips is a BORE and seems like a waste of time.  If you would like me to go with you, I can design a special field trip and price to help.  Just contact me.

One of the most important things you can do for your child is to help them develop a sound worldview.

The glasses through which you study nature are critical!  There are a number of study packs I have put together to help you do just that:

The Dino Study Pack
Contains three generously sized fossil specimens and two books that help unravel the mystery of dinosaurs

Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No
Contains the book and a number of important fossil specimens

The Ice Age Study Pack

One of the most confusing things in my study of geology has been the “Ice Age”.  In this pack are two great kid books that help unravel this mystery, especially fitting it together with the Biblical chronology

The Genesis Flood Study Pack
This book by the Late Henry Morris thoroughly examines the Genesis account of the great “Noah’s Flood” and helps put the pieces together.  This is a classic and a terrific book.  Also included are several rock, mineral and fossil specimens that could have all been produced by this Flood

Footprints in the Ash

The eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State has served as an active and living laboratory for the study of the geological effects of volcanoes.  The book is written by a geologist who accepts the Biblical account of the Flood.  Through the study of the effects of Mt. St. Helens eruption, many geological phenomena can be better explained by a great cataclysmic flood, such as the one in Genesis.  The pack comes with four volcanic samples from Mt. St. Helens.

Now that you have decided the area(s) that you are interested in, just follow these simple steps to choosing a curriculum:

  1. Choose the text that you want, either in book format or CD.  The CD format is simply the book in PDF format.  Call me for pricing.
  2. Decide if you want to use the teaching DVD.
  3. Get the required rock kit(s) that goes with the text.
  4. Decide if you want to expand your study by purchasing the supplementary kits.

Here is a general description of the textbooks and specimen kits:

- Igneous Rocks – A study of rocks that are produced by fire both underneath and above ground.

- Metamorphic Rocks – A study of rocks that are formed by rearranging existing rocks through heat and pressure.

- Sedimentary Rocks – A study of rocks that are formed by sedimentation from water-born deposits.

- Rock Cycle – A study of the relationship among the three rock types.  For example granite is an igneous rock.  But under the right conditions it can be altered through heat and pressure to produce granite gneiss – a banded metamorphic rock.

- Minerals – Learning the difference between a mineral and a rock is fundamental to the study of geology.  In addition this curriculum will help your student identify minerals by examining their various properties.
- Rock and Mineral Identification
A great field guide for identifying and categorizing your finds.  In addition this curriculum comes with a kit with everything you need to help identify your finds in the field.

- Earth Science – As the title implies, this curriculum examines a little bit of everything in your study of the earth from volcanoes to earthquakes.

- Earthquakes – A study of the dynamics of earthquakes with some practical projects to prepare you for the next “big one”.

- Volcanoes
– This is a fascinating study of all the different types of volcanoes, their eruptions and the lavas they produce.

- Kits
– Each curriculum comes with its own kit that contains the rocks and minerals discussed in the textbook.

-
Supplemental Kits
– Generally there is one kit to purchase for each curriculum.  However, if you want to broaden interest, there are a number of kits available to help you to do just that.  Drop me a note if you need help in selecting one of these.
